Taking Charge of Your Fertility

"Taking Charge of Your Fertility"

There are a number of different methods that can be used to determine if a woman is ovulating. Some of the more common ovulation tests that are used include:

Basal body temperature (BBT) charts are not actually ovulation predictors, however the temperature rise is in response to an ovulation that has already occurred so you can use this method to determine if you are ovulating, and if so, when.

Luteinizing Hormone Kits

Luteinizing hormone (LH) is released in response to estrogen levels in the body, and is produced to help an egg rupture from a follicle so that ovulation occurs. LH kits measure the amount of LH in the body and they are a terrific predictor of possible ovulation because there is an LH spike approximately 24 to 36 hours before ovulation. If your cycles vary in length from month to month you may require more than one kit. Most of the kits provide enough tests for five to seven days and some of the most common ovulation prediction kits are Answer, First Response and Clear Plan Easy.

Saliva Ovulation Predictor Tests

Saliva based ovulation predictor tests are designed to indicate the most fertile time within a women's cycle by checking for a ferning pattern in dried saliva. Higher levels of estrogen during your most fertile period cause mucous membranes to produce more salt. This increased amount of salt causes the saliva to crystallize and form a "fern like" structure when dry which can be viewed on a slide with a microscope. You can easily identify the fern-like pattern shown below from three to four days prior to ovulation.
